Judicial Reform Failure Keeps Special Interests Involved in Judicial Selection

House chooses trial lawyers over common sense reform

Oklahoma City (April 24, 2014) – State Chamber President and CEO Fred Morgan made the following statement following the failure of Senate Joint Resolution 21 in the House today:

“It’s disappointing that a special interest group like the Oklahoma Bar Association will continue to exercise its monopoly power to appoint 40-percent of the Judicial Nominating Commission members. It’s unfortunate that a simple, common sense reform like making the Commission more accountable to voters and provide a more diverse mix of attorneys can’t pass. It remains abundantly clear from recent decisions that reform of the process of appointing appellant judges is desperately in need of reform.”
